                                                           GOOD NEWS 

                            At the Annual Town Meeting of June 27, 2022 the voters chose to allow the Council on Aging to advertise a new position "Co-ordinator" of Activities of the COA.  We will be looking for this part time position to include 8-10 hours per week.  This person will be responsible researching programs of interest to seniors and educational programs on health, safety, and available services for seniors and also for creating new activities for our seniors to enjoy.  We will be advertising this position shortly, taking resumes and interviewing candidates as quickly as possible.  Please contact Maribel Larange at 508-882-5549 x1 if you have any questions.

       Melanie Silva was  appointed  as the new Activities Coordinator of the Council on Aging.  She officially began her duties on September 1, 2022. Some may recognize Melanie as the Zumba Gold instructor for Oakham adults on Tuesday and Friday mornings 10:30 a.m.-11:15a.m. in the voting room at the Oakham Town Hall.  

   Since beginning her new duties, she has been gathering information on interests and ideas from many seniors.  We held a Meet Melanie Day on Wednesday, September 21 where at least 25 seniors attended to meet her and to share ideas.  She also met with Pauline's reunion of the Memoire writing class get their input.

MONTH OF MAY 2023:

   Some of the ideas she has put forward:  The new Lunch Bunch will meet at 308 restaurant in East Brookfield for lunch at 12:00p.m. on Friday,May 19 , 2023  Please sign up at the Back Door Cafe if you would like to join us. On Friday, June 16, 2023 they will be enjoying a brown-bag picnic lunch at the Moore State Park in Paxton at 12:30p.m.   Please sign up as usual.

    On Wednesday, May 3,2023 coffee and...at 9:00a.m. and what's cooking with RD Nicole at 10:00a.m.

     Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at 1:oo p.m. we will be showing "A League of their Own" just in time for baseball season.

      Wednesday, May 17,2023 12:30 p.m. - the story of Rock and Roll with Rick Hendra.

    Every Wednesday morning from 9:00a.m.-11:00a.m. she holds a Coffee and ------- with Friends. All Welcome.

    On Tuesday mornings at 10:00a.m there is Corn Hole on the Common (or in the church hall if raining).

    On Tuesday and Friday mornings at 10:30 a.m.-11:15 a.m. she teaches Zumba Gold and toning

     Wednesday May 24, 2023 -  Opening Day- Brave Hearts at Holy Cross College Field - 10:30 a.m.  

      Wednesday, May 31, 2023 - Coffee...with Friends 9-11a.m. Where are we going next?)   followed by movie at 100p.m.

MONTH OF JUNE:

      Zumba classes - Mondays and Fridays - 10:30a.m.-11:15 a.m.  New participants have been arriving weekly and class size is growing very nicely.  We welcome new seniors from North Brookfield and West Brookfield to these classes.

      Corn Hole everyTuesday  10:00-11:00a.m.

      Coffee with Friends in the mornings and a film on the 7th and 28th. STILL by Michael J. Fox on the 7th at 1:00p.m and PAL JOEY on the 28th at 1:00p.m.

        June 21, 2023 at 1:00p.m. meet with Tina Bemis at the Fire Station for the Fire Pit arrangement of flowers.  The fee for the class is $10.00.  There are 29 participants already signed up.  A Full Class.

         BLOOD PRESSURE CLINIC:  June 8, 2023

         PODIATRIST:  June 26, 2023.  Our next openings are in August.  June and July are full.  Call now for an August appointment - only 5 remaining.  Call Lucy at 508-882-3358.

     Friday June 2 - Lunch and Learn with Lisa Holloway- yoga instructor and Life Coach.

      Friday, June 16 - Lunch Bunch - join us at the Cennect Restaurant in Spencer on Mechanic St. at 12:30p.m.

           Property taxes due August 1, 2023

            ZUMBA has changed the days for classes:  it will be held every Monday and Friday starting July 1 at 10:30a.m. -11:15 a.m.

            CORN HOLE will continue to be played on Tuesdays at 10:00a.m. on the Common.

            Coffee with Friends on Wednesdays 9:00am.m-10:00a.m.

             July 5 - 1:00 p.m.- MOVIE: TOP GUN MAVERICK

              July 26- 1:00p.m.- MOVIE:  MY FAIR LADY

            Wed. July 12, 2023 at 10:a.m - Meet with Sgt. Kevin Mardirosian to learn about all the new SCAMS that we are encountering.

             Wed. July 26, 2023 at 10:00a.m. - meet with our Fire Chief Tim Howe for safety lessons and learning how to use AEDs.

             Thursdays: 12:30P.M. -  Bring a craft of project to work on or play a game with Friends.

             FRIDAY, jULY 5, 2023 - LUNCH AND LEARN WITH ELLIE DOWNER- THE ART OF BIRDING

              DRIDAY, JULY 21, 2023  12:00 p.m.- LUNCH PUNCH AT THE FIRE STATION FOR A COOK-OUT SPONSORED AND COOKED BY THE HOWE FAMILY OF OAKHAM- THANK YOU  for your support to the seniors of Oakham.  Bring a    favorite salad to share at the salad buffet if you wish.

August, 2023;       

              ZUMBA will be held every Monday and Friday mornings 10:30a.m.-11:45a.m.

              CORN HOLE WILL BE PLAYED EVERY TUESDAY MORNING ON THE COMMON OR AT THE CHURCH AT                          10:00A.M.

               Tuesdays at 1:00p.m. the Sr. Center is open for card games of your choice.

                Wednesdays open with Coffee w/ Friends from 9:00a.m. -10:00a.m.   

                On August 2 the movie DR. NO will be shown                  at 1:00p. . 

                On August  9, everyone will meet at the Lake Dean Campground Pavillon for a cook out/picnic .

                 August 18, everyone is invited to attend the Lunch Bunch at Val's in Holden. We usually try to arrive around 12:30p.m.

                 August 23 at 1:00p.m. the movie "FIDDLER ON THE ROOF" will be presented.

                On  August  30 Wednesday -  COME AND ENJOY AN ICE CREAM SOCIAL AND MEET OUR NEW COA                                  MEMBERS!   ALL ARE WELCOME!

 

Looking toward September:  Zumba will still be held on Mondays as usual.  On Friday, Zumba class will change to a 

FUNctional Fitness class aimed at improving strength, balance, flexibility and overall good health 10:30a.m.-11:15a.m.

ZUMBA GOLD EXERCISE CLASS-     Join Melanie Silva for Zumba Gold exercise classes on Tuesday and Friday mornings 10:30a.m.-11:15a.m. in the voting room at the town hall. The classes run for a very moderate fee of $2 per person per class.  Not sure?  Have questions?  Come for visit and meet Melanie. Give it a try.

BLOOD PRESSURE CLINICS- Are held on the second Thursday of each month between 11:00a.m. and 11:15a.m.   Pressures will be taken by Oakham nurse Chris Letendre who has volunteered her services to the town.  There is no need for an appointment.  We will operate on a first come basis.

PODIATRY CLINIC:  By appointment only - Call Lucy 508-882-3358- third Monday of the month.

COFFEE AND -----WITH FRIENDS - Every Wednesday at 9:00a.m. - all welcome

CORN HOLE:  Tuesdays 10a.m.

PEN PALS WITH 4TH GRADE STUDENTS - 4 times per year - check for dates with Jane Pease.
