Back Door Cafe

Future Happenings

During the COVID-19 era, the Back Door Cafe,  Congregate Meal Site and Sr. Center are closed to the public as is the Oakham Town Hall.  However, Meals on Wheels are delivered Monday-Thursday by Jan Pierce between 10:00am and 11:00am.  We are also offering grab-and-go lunches at 11:30am those same days.  These lunches need to be ordered 48hrs. in advance by calling Jan at the Back Door Cafe and leaving a message.  To place an order(s) please call Jan at 508-882-5251.  Menus provided by the Elder Services of Worcester are posted each month in the "Oakham Herald".  If you find a particular lunch or several lunches you would like to try, they may all be ordered in one phone call.   In case of  inclement weather, please call 508-882-5251 after 8:30 a.m.  If there is no answer, meals will not be delivered as we will be closed.

Please remember, The Back Door Cafe is closed on Fridays.

The Council on Aging has been preparing an extra meal for anyone interested each month.  In July we offered and delivered a cook-out lunch to 84 residents, in August it was a delivered chicken bbq to 76 individuals, September  was a grab-and-go picnic treat for 45 seniors, November we sent out 35 home-made made turkey dinners, and for Jan/Feb we will be offered homemade American Chop Suey with meatballs, a slice of gralic bread and, of course, dessert on Friday Feb. 5, 2021 at 12noon for which we had 75 reservations.  Feb/March we packaged a delicious and nutritious homemade Italian Wedding Soup with a lite sandwich of turkey or ham and cheese on a small roll accompanied by chips and a dessert.  This was served on Friday, March 5.  Also  In March, Fire Chief Tim Howe has offered to prepare the next meal which will be his famous home-made Lasagna with garlic bread and roll and dessert on April 16.  The grab and go time will be noon time at the Fire Station.  Please place your order with Lucy at 508-882-338 on or before April 10, 2021.  It will be a wonderful treat, so stay alert for further information in the Herald or in the Barre Gazette or on the new electronic sign in the center of town.

We are always availabe to assist you with anything you may need.  Feel free to contact Pauline Dwelly at 508-882-5215 or Lucy Tessnau at 508-882-3358 and we will do our best to serve you.  If you know of anyone who would enjoy a card or note due to illness or loneliness, our Sunshine Committee, Meg Goodrow, would love to send out these messages of cheer (or sympathy in case of a death in a family).

We have done our best to keep in touch with our seniors throughout this past year and will continue to do so.  Please remember, there are now 630 seniors in town and only two of us to keep up with the program and to keep you informed. We enjoy our contacts and look foreward to speaking with you.  We are here to help.

We are not anticipating opening the dining site or Sr. Center before September.  We are hoping that the restrictions that are now in place will become more workable for us to meet their standards.

Now that some restrictions have loosened sooner than we expected, our opening is still scheduled for September.  If we find someone who would like to offer a class during the summer months, we can work with making arrangements.  However, pleasse realize that we are in the process of making some changes and are not in a situation where we can open fully.  We are getting new furniture, new curtains, cleaning out closets, trying to locate storage space for necessary equipment, and, over all, trying to have a new look and add some new technology.  This all takes time and should be in place after Labor Day.  Please have patience with us. We will still be having take-out lunches and some programs outside.
